Well, I did a bad thing yesterday. I was going to put a box of DEF in my truck. I put open the tank and starting to pour, and realized it was going in the wrong filler. OOPS!! My truck now is getting a new fuel system, because we had to start it to move to get on the roll off tow truck. Thankfully in insurance coverage under the comp, they will pay for stupid mistakes. So, take heed, don't do it, and if you do don't start it. Kirt

What kind of amateur tow company can’t move an inoperable vehicle??? I'm with you lynnmor, they should have had the ability to move such without starting such or least postion it so when rolled off the truck it was right close or for that matter right inside shop door Ugh !!!
After DW put gas in our truck the had a wrecker pick it up an then drop it right inside the Ford dealer is a slot half way down inside the shop, wrecker driver look like he had done it a hundred times an never put a scatch on our truck or anything around the shop

Only because of how I was parked and the other RV tow vehicles around. Needed an angle we couldn"t get. It ran for less then 20 seconds, but long enough. I was told even in accessory mode, the fuel pump will prime and fill the fuel rails. Again bad with the DEF in the lines. Good news, Tuesday or Wednesday I'll be good as new, with all new coolant, fuel , and those very expensive filters. A lesson learned, not some forgotten. Kirt

Drain the tank & replace fuel filters, the pair of fuel filters are only about $60.

The complete fuel system, injectors, fuel rails, pump, filters, there is one kit Ford has for it. As I have learned in the last 48 hours, this is not a uncommon thing. The DEF, will crystalize in the fuel, and block the system. If, I hadn't started it, and not even put in accessory mode, to get in neutral, then a basic flush and draining of the fuel system should have been good. The DEF, goes straight to the bottom of the tank, per my brother,(retired engine engineer from Ford). The pick up is there, and bam, damage done. Life and it's lessons, Kirt

Wow, I knew it was a serious issue if DEF is put in the fuel tank. I wasn't aware the fuel pump cycles even in the acc mode, so yeah, there it goes into the system. Since DEF is mainly water, for sure it goes right to the bottom, as oils float on water really well. I guess it's good (in a bad way) that Ford has a kit for situations like this. Every time I add DEF I double check myself and make sure no one/ nothing is distracting me before I twist open a cap. Way to easy a mistake to make. I would really like to see Ford use a separate door for access to the DEF tank to make it a bit more difficult to make that all to easy mistake. Where does Dodge put their DEF filler? GM?

Older, GM, pre 2020 it was under the hood I believe, Dodge not sure, but I think it is in fuel door as well.

So the best Detroit can do is put it in a totally inaccessible place or make to so accessible it's prone to making a mistake? Yes, the openings are different, but this happens so frequently Ford assembled a parts "Kit". I guess adding a second door for DEF is a bridge to far.

When I was still working, we had some 2010 GM trucks and their fill was near the fenders.

My preferred solution, were money no object, would be to do a body-off restoration of my '02 D'max and drop an LBZ into it. :-) Would get the 6-speed Allie, too.

Well, got the truck back today. At least my first long trip with it will be with out the trailer. I have to give shout out to Farmers Insurance for sending an adjuster out quickly and Griffith Ford in Uvalde TX, for turning it around in 4 days. Happy Thanksgiving to all! Kirt

Good to hear you got it back and it runs. Even better your insurance company did what they need to do, the topper is the Ford dealer, that's the real surprise. 4 days for a job that big is impressive. Thanks for the follow up

My 2019 Chevy 2500 def fill was under the hood on the passenger side, yes, painful to fill but truck was too small for my 2021 382 MBQ to tow safe. On The 2020 GMC, the def is next to the fuel fill.

Dodge def fill 2013-present is behind fuel door next to diesel filler just like Ford... however, my 2012 uses no def so I'll probably be keeping it til the wheels fall off!
