I install a new surge guard surge protector and a harbor freight air hose reel (for use on the 50 amp power cord). Please check this out and let me know what you think. I love the new power cord reel. Soooo much better then throwing it into the basement. Takes up so much less space.

Yep have the same thing, want to go to a progressive surge protector like we had in our old 5th wheel, really like it an had the monitor inside next to the slide controls ... Again mdcamper nice installation I think laknox had a progressive surge protector he installed next to the water panel in his 5th wheel which was also very nice ... Safe Travels Chuck

Why do you prefer the progressive? Just curious. I struggled over which one to get. Both seemed to have similar features but with the remote display on this one it seems that there is more info available to the end user.

The progressive surge protector as I stated also had the display an reading thought a number of threads on different forms I come to the conclusion the the progressive was a bit better with protection, is it now days, who knows, there has been changes in both over the last few years ... Right now like Edd505 I have the surge guard one like Edd's that plugs in an is not mounted within the trailer like you have done...
The progressive is somewhat smaller as well an I have to tell you it saved my bacon in our old 5th wheel when the outside plug shorted at the trailer plug-in thus saving the trailer wiring from be destroyed or even burning down the trailer
So is your surge guard surge protector a good protector, I believe so, is a progressive a good protector, yes, it's all in what your preference is, now that I have had both the reason I would go with the progressive is because it is smaller in size
Also Others may have different idea's on the subject, but if you read a number of forms it seems that RV owners lean toward the progressive other than the surge guard... Again either one is a very good idea to protect your investment, have you made a wise investment I believe so, again great job
Safe travels

Not me that has the hard-wired Progressive, Chuck, though I've made posts about them. Right now, where I to get one, I'd likely go Progressive hard-wired simply because there've been lots of complaints about the post-mounted ones. Water-intrusion being the biggest issue and Progressive not covering them under warranty. In inboard unit does away with that problem. Second issue with the portables is that the cord cover, especially for 50a units, isn't deep enough to allow the use of cords with handles on them. You either have to change cords or use an adapter without a handle, or cut or remove the weather cover, which only exacerbates the water-intrusion problem. The other option would be a Hughes Autoformer, and I'm investigating them, as well. Protects against both surges =and= low-voltage.

Lyle Having a protector that just simply shuts down the electricity pretty much ruins that trip, I use an autoformer because it protects the air conditioner when voltage is too low or just above the very minimum. Only 120 volt motor driven devices are subject to the low voltage damage that an EMS might protect. Spending a lot of money to protect cheap RV components is of marginal value.

Sounds more like Ford or Chevy ...... both are good.

I use both. A “plug in to the pole” portable surge protector, then an autoformer. The surge protector is there primarily to protect the autoformer from really bad things, like lightning strikes, etc.

I looked at the autoformer and just couldn't pull the trigger on that expensive of a device. Maybe we'll add it later. I have done so many needed upgrades this year the funds would have run dry quicker. LOL

I tend to overkill everything ... it's one of my many flaws ;-). What you are doing is good stuff and well done ... keep sharing.
