I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed - ehck, I don't even have a shed! Just dropping in to remind us all to make sure the water heater is off and the temp of water from the hot tap is cold and then turn off the pump *before* removing the anode rod. Check a bunch of times to make sure there is no pressure in the system.
Some number of years ago I did 2 out of 3 of those steps. We had been in a nearby campground near end of season. Water heater on in the morning before our departure back home. Forecast called for low temps at home so I wanted to winterize. Figured I'd isolate the heater and get that done while I dumped the tanks and used the home air compressor to blow air into the trailer lines from the city water inlet at 10 psi or so.
You fellas know where this is going. When the last thread let go on the plug it exited with notable force - taking the ratchet, socket and extension with it about 8 feet away from the trailer. The water wasn't scalding but it was still at the hot bathwater level and could have been scalding if I wasn't so slow packing up. Or the force of the metal maybe might could have hurt someone in front of it. Would like to think I wouldn't have let anyone stand there but then again, I didn't expect what happened either...
Just be careful. Open lots of valves - all of 'em if you can - before you remove the anode. Take your time and think. (Yup - I'm saying that to myself - yay for premature white matter disease)

Where do you purchase these things? Amazon I guess?? Or eBay, all that matters is the length and material. Magnesium gives the best protection, aluminum will last longer and aluminum-zinc will reduce odor if that is a problem. Even buying one too long is easily fixed with a hacksaw.
