Hey all, we are going to be taking our trailer out of country for once, going from Regina, Saskatchewan to Rapid City, SD in June 2019. We have refined out route several times and have had difficulty in choosing a campground around the Mount Rushmore area. Has anyone stayed around this area? We don’t need to be inside the city, but would like to stay in a campground nearby, so within 30-40 miles would be nice. Will have the tow vehicle unhooked so a little further into town wouldn’t be that bad. Would like full hookups for our C241RLK, will be staying for about 4-5 nights, so not having to move to empty and full tanks would be a plus! Any recommendations would be appreciated!

mini1298 We have stayed in different camp grounds outside of Rapid city, one across from the reptile gardens The sites are pretty close together but well kept an nice owners ...
Another one was nice but more out in the open was Heartland campgrounds heartlandcampground.com/ Nice campground with large gravel pull thoughts ...
it's a really nice camp grounds with large pull thought sites an friendly owners an fee ice cream at checking for
the family an a nice swimming pool ...
Out always in Wyoming but still pretty close is Seventh Ranch www.historicwest.com/ which is right next to the Little Big Horn which is a must see... They have gravel pull thought sites placed up the side of a hill but are pretty level, some people do not like this camp grounds because of the gravel road to get to it... We thought it was pretty nice an have stayed there four times for a couple of days each along with a few times with friends ... They also have ice cream at check in an are friendly owners an is well off the interstate so not much noise at all ... We do not stay at camp grounds that Good Sam rates below a "8" so most we have stayed at around Rapid City are well kept camp grounds, have clean restrooms an showers an friendly people ... There is lots to see in that area if you like to travel some distance's, I hope you enjoy that area as much as well have, oh one last thing is you have to stop for a rest stop at Wall Drug, it's a hoot, you will get lost in the buildings LOL ... Safe Travels Chuck an is very clean

Thank you very much Chuck! Makes me feel better when someone else has stayed there, and knows the good campgrounds. A little gravel doesn’t bother me, our family reunion every year is 8 miles of gravel from the highway to the farm, so 16 miles total, just take it slow, and let the good times roll! And we will definitely have to check out the Wall Drug for sure!

On your way if your traveling on I-90 in Eastern SD. an need to stay over night Famil-E-Fun Campground & RV Park in Mitchell SD is also a very nice camp grounds, great owners an large pull thought sites, it's 9 out of 9 on the Good Sam meter an I have to tell you it is very nice a has very great camping rates as well ... There is allot to see in an around Mitchell, there is a really nice Indian village discovered in 1910, now an archaeological dig & an educational museum, really cool, very large building covering the dig site an a great little museum an grounds ... The The Corn Palace, commonly advertised as The World's Only Corn Palace is a multi- purpose arena/baseball court with corn on the outside ... We were for the most part let down about the Corn Palace, allot of hip over a baseball area with venders on the court to sell you stuff ... Safe Travels Chuck

We have been there twice, first time camping 40+ years ago...double that CG is there...if I could remember. Last time we "motelled" it.
I did want to say, if they still offer the evening presentation at Mt. Rushmore do not miss it....so moving. Also enjoyed the Needles Park not far from the Memorial.

So far, looks like the best campground for us is going to be the happy holiday RV resort. We both only have a week off of work, so will be a quick trip, probably 1 overnight stop on the way to and from there, and likely about 4-5 nights at the campground. I wish we had more time, but work constraints for both of us prohibit even a 2 week trip. Thanks again for the recommendations, has made our lives a lot easier! And the GF already has our days pretty full with activities and things to see, and the Wall Drug Store is one of the must sees!

If your staying at the happy holiday RV resort you have to walk across the road to the reptile gardens, it's really a great place, you can spend a number of hours walking though it Safe Travels Chuck

Sorry for the delay, but we did end up staying at the happy holiday resort for 4 nights total, perfect location for us, saw pretty much everything we wanted to, Mount Rushmore, even though it rained and fogged over about 45 min after arrival, got some pics though. Went to Wall Drug, man, that place is crazy, though highly overpriced for anything! Visited the air and space museum, reptile gardens, the dinosaur museum, bear country USA, and Cosmos Mystery Area, not really much of a mystery if you understand physics haha! And took a drive up Iron Mountain Road in the F150, was fun, but was raining and cloudy, so less bikes than there would be if it was sunny and clear! Overall a great trip, and thanks again Chuck for recommending Happy Holiday Resort!
