Hi everyone,
Lately when I plug my 5th wheel into my truck I get a message on my dash saying WIRING FAULT ON TRAILER, usually it still shows my brake at the correct gain and lights work. Today when I hooked up, same message displayed but also said trailer disconnected. After driving a short way my dash chimed and said trailer connected. I had this at the dealer a few months ago for same problem. They said they couldn't find anything wrong, made sure everything was tight and that was it. I pulled a few weekend trips and all was good till last Friday. Has anyone else had this problem? I don't think its my truck due to I also pull my friends trailer occasionally and I never get the warning.
Oh, one more thing, it doesn't matter if I use the plug in the bed or under the bumper, they both show fault when plugged in.

If the trailer lights work correctly, that would rule out the ground connection. After checking ground, then you have an intermittent problem with the brake wiring on the trailer. Start at the plug and continue back to the axles. Often wires that go thru axles wear inside. Continue from the axle tube to the brake magnets. Etrailer has some good advice on their website.

Lynnmor is probably right with the wiring within the axles. I have seen that cause more issues with trucks than anything else. Since this problem tends to be intermittent I would just replace the wiring thru the axles. I have seen spots worn into the insulation that is about the size of this - Yes, spots worn that small. The Ford system is that sensitive, it picks up faults before fuses blow.

Today we hooked up our trailer. We had spent the night in Lafayette LA. As soon as I got in the truck, the dash said "trailer wiring fault" I got out, unplugged and replugged in the 7 way. Same message on the dash. Called RV store across the freeway, talked with service manager He asked me to test mt brakes, none, so he asked me to pull the emergency brake pin and plug it back in. As I reached for the pin, the entire plastic housing melted and the wires fried into the J box. So, after calls to KZ, my dealer, nothing could be fixed with out finding where the short in the brake wiring was. I found a RV shop in Lafayette, Kajun Kampers, the owner said bring it and he'd get to it after lunch. He found the brake wire that ran from driver to passenger side, thru the axle, had a 1/4 inch of insulation peeled back. The bare spot had contacted the interior of the axle and burnt brake wiring to the emergency pin. So, hour and half later, I was fixed and ready to go, all for $200, fair considering the issue. I say all this to recommend Kajun Kampers, quick and fair. Also, a wire with broken insulation had to happen when installed. Probably as they pulled the wire thru the axle. I have sent a copy of the invoice to Cindy at KZ service, we will see if they step up. As an owner I accept my self inflicted pain, but there is no way to know what is in a hollow tube, and no way to repair that at the rv park Safe travels to all Kirt

This wiring shorting in the axles really drives me crazy because its such a solvable problem, and I was dealing with it years ago. Why these axle manufacturers continue to use wire that isn't more abrasion resistant is beyond me. I can only guess that because it's not the axle manufacturers who pay for this, its either the coach owner or dealer (who unsuccessfully tries to get warranty reimbursement, because the axle mfg blames the coach builder and vice versa).

KZ emailed today, to verify my address. They intend to reimburse me for the brake wire failure. I am very happy they stepped up so quickly and without a fight. Now, how long will it take to get the check, hmmmm Kirt

Great news Kirt, good to hear KZ stepped up. I hope KZ goes after whoever made your axles, either Dexter or Lippert.

We came home for few days to do basic things, and we had received our check from KZ for the brake wiring repair. So just about 3 weeks from when I turned in the invoice. I'd have to say that is quick enough to satisfy me. Kirt
