i just recently purchased 2 new bicycles for me and my wife, got two giant brand road bikes , a lot lighter than the old roadmaster mountain bikes a bought at Walmart years ago , I would like to relocate the spare over to the right side of the campers bumper, and put a 2inch receiver plate to install a additional swagman xc2 bike rack on the back bumper of the camper. directions state only mount on a welded bumper. does anybody know if this bumper on my 2015 spree escape 196s could handle the additional weight?

My dealer told me not to do it and I believe I also read it in the owner's manual (but not 100% sure about the reading it).

I did just that, but would NEVER carry the bikes on it. I carry the bikes in the truck while towing, and then transfer the bike rack to the truck when I need to drive to a bike trail and want the convenience of the rack.

I carry our bikes in the back of the truck too.
Frankly I'm a bit nervous about even the tire being mounted back there if the bumper is that fragile. I may buy install the additional support things from Amazon referenced in an earlier post just for peace of mind - or is that going overboard?

the reason for asking ,is with the bikes in the back of the truck, it utilizes more bed space than wanting to give up, and the handlebars stand higher than the bed sides, so defeats the pourpose of the hard covers on the avalanche , thus exposing everything to the rain. I also have a double hitch extender, but not sure if I feel any more confortable using that with a WDH hitch head, and adding more tounge weight.

Again call the MFG or your local dealer, I'd personnel call the MFG, you might get a better answer than the dealer.... What can it hurt, all they can say don't do it, or it's unless you put 600pds on it your ok LOL ....
As well read you manual, I must say somewhere how much can be put on the bumper. On our 5th wheel (G384RLT) we have a big rack on the back, manual states no more than 500pds, so in your manual it has to say somewhere how much you can do ..... 2 bikes and the mount can't weigh that much, maybe 150 at max

I figured I would take the advice here and not mount a bike rack on the back bumper of my spree escape 196, it MAY hold it, but not willing to take the chance, so I ordered a front receiver For my chevy avalanche 1500 from etrailer, And will mount the bikes on the front of the tv. This way I can actually see the bikes, and won't lose tounge weight as ihear a double receiver extension. Really reduces that. With only a 5.3 ft bed , didn't want to loose half that cargo space , Plus could still use the hard tonnou cover to keep my gear dry. Only concern was how much air intake I may lose trough the front grill, but don't really think the bikes will restrict too much

I don't think you will loose any, bikes don't take up that much an wind will go around them, unless your out were it's 120 degrees in the shade I would no worry. An if it's 120 in the shade you need to be next to the pool drinking a soda pop LOL not driving down the road Chuck

There are some bike racks that mount between your electric tongue jack and the frame, they are pretty cool and that's what I plan to get.

vagov, I always carried my bike(s) in my truck, open box, (as mentioned above) when hauling my trailer. But having recently purchased a new truck with a tonneau cover I also was looking for a new way to transport my bike. I found three things out about rear bumper bike racks. a)Most trailer manufacturers do not recommend using them do to the torque load they put on the bumper and b) the shake the crap out of your bike and c) you cannot see your bike and what's going on with them when towing. I ended up going with the JACK-IT Bike Carrier by Aero, manufactured by Lippert Industries. This is the one Gary references and has the picture of in his post. Mounts on the trailer tongue over the tongue jack. They make variations of this rack to use with trailer hitch receivers so I checked to see if they had an adapter so the rack could be used when not towing my trailer, truck alone. Answer - NO. So I checked with a local metal fab shop and they said they can make one up for about $45.00. This would let me use the same rack when hauling my trailer or with just my truck.

Hi Vagov, i recently bought a 196s 2013 and came to the same questioning for my bike rack. On my 2013, you can see the welding all around where the 2 frame beems meet the bumper. So i am pretty sure that defines a welded bumper. As for the weight, i invite you to check in the owners manual. Im mine, they allow a maximum of 100 pounds extra weight on the bumper. My combined 2 bikes, rack, bumper hitch and spare tire equals just about 100 pounds. So, i am comfortable travelling with the rear bike rack set-up on the bumper. Hope that helps

Thanks. Tweeter , I will look into the weld and weight. Mine is a 2015. But sure it,s pretty much the same set up, still leaning on mounting a front hitch on my avalanche and haul bikes up front is a thought right now

vagov,
Follow the link www.lci1.com/lci-storage-systems#media go to the storage system sell sheet and download that for the best info.
This is similar to what was installed as OEM on my Durango. It states that it is compatible with Lippert frames which is what you should have. The item shown shows the spare tire mount which would solve that problem also. It also states it has a 200lb capacity.
The rack that is mounted on my Durango is also a Lippert and is welded on instead of bolted and is rated for 250lb capacity.
If you would like more photos of how mine is attached let me know.

Looking at my rear bumper. Seems to have solid welds on both corners so should hold weight. However, I really don't like the fact that I can't see the bikes on the back of the trailer and constantly wondering what's going on back there, , also considered buying the jack it, to ride above the truck bed. But seems like a lot of work getting bikes on and off at that height. Not plan of taking bikes every camping trip, only on occasion, So I went along and ordered a front hitch receiver from etrailer, just seems to be the best fit ,

I called KZ when I bought my 196. They said the rear bumper is not designed for the weight and stress of a bike rack. Full stop.

Vagov,
Where are you staying to ride the GAP? I used the KOA near Connellsville and that worked well. I still need to ride from there to Pittsburg and a section east of Harpers Ferry to complete the entire trail. Hopefully I will get it done this summer.
I travel with the bikes in the truck bed. I have a Swagman and sometimes use it when a bike trail is some distance from the campground. The Swagman is carried on the trailer bumper without bikes.
