I have a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 110,000 miles on it rated to tow 6,500 lbs. I tow an 16RBT which weighs 3,100 lbs loaded out. Set in the tow/haul mode this thing pulls like a mule, I've crossed the continental divide more than once and it handles great. I considered something bigger like a Suburban or Tahoe but for it's small size this is a great SUV for towing. You can also look at the Toyota Tacoma, it has a great tow rating for a smaller pickup.
Good luck!

Years ago when we lived up North we had a boat we had to winterize and we used something pink we got from Boat US that is a fluid that will not freeze made from beet juice so it is safe for water lines. This was over twenty years ago but maybe that's an option.

The season does not have to come to an end! The best part of the year is coming up in Florida!

I use truck stops whenever possible and I have only have a 16RBT. They have more room to maneuver and I don't have to worry about steep driveway aprons where I bottom out.

My wife and I traveled Michigan in May of last year. We entered from Indiana, drove up the Lake Huron coast, then stopped in Saginaw. Saginaw Valley State University is home to the Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum, we loved it and it's free. Further up we went to Mackinaw City and took the ferry to Mackinac Island. You have to leave the RV on the mainland, Mackinac has never allowed cars, even the taxi cabs are horse drawn. When the winds subsided we crossed the bridge to the upper peninsula which is beautiful.
We found Michigan to be pretty, but the highways need a little maintenance, no, a lot of maintenance.
In Elkhart Indiana, just south of the Michigan state line we visited the RV Hall of Fame, very interesting!
We can't recommend campgrounds because we never stayed in any in Michigan, we almost always use retailers.
Have a great trip, we can't wait to get back on the road.

Hi Robert,
My wife and I also graduated from a pop up. We have a Sportsman 16RBT. How did I know the gray water was full? My wife yelled for me to come in from grilling because the plastic storage bin she was using for storage in the tub was floating. Welcome to camping, if we learn from our mistakes then I've learned a lot lol.
Now I never go more than 24 hours without dumping.

Hello Nancy and Dan, welcome to the group. My wife and I took a west coast trip back in November and December, your area of our Country is gorgeous, we can't wait to go back. We also traded up from a popup, then a modified tear drop, now a hybrid.
Enjoy, retirement is great work if you can get it!

Hello,
My wife and I picked up a 2011 16RBT last September. We traded up from a modified tear drop that was too short to stand up in. We bought the hybrid for two reasons, one the light tow weight and two, the flexibility. When we take the grand kids to an RV park or campground we set out the tents on both ends and have plenty of room. When we travel across the country just the two of us we never bother setting out the tents. We have been from Florida to the Canadian border and out to the Pacific. We considered a popup but you cannot 'discrete' camp in a pop up. While traveling to a destination that may be six days away we will stay at Walmart, Flying J, some state rest stops, Gander Mountain and lots of other similar locations.
The one drawback to the Sportsman is the low ground clearance. Look carefully before entering any parking lot or you might bottom out.
Enjoy your camper!

Back on the road again recently for a three day trip with the Grandkids. We went to Lion Country Safari which is just west of West Palm Beach Florida. The Safari/Zoo has a KOA on their property, you can actually hear lions roar at night from your camp site.
We are not big fans of KOA in general because we have had such a wide range of experiences at their locations but this KOA was very nice. The location is great, price is very reasonable and the facility is clean. The staff is friendly and helpful, we will return. The sites are decent size and shaded by tall pines.

We just returned from another short Florida trip, this time to Palm Beach County. State parks in Florida fill their reservations months in advance but many county parks have a few sites available last minute. We stayed in John Prince Park in Lake Worth. Located on Lake Osborne this park is beautiful with plenty of recreation activities and close to everything Palm Beach has to offer. We plan on returning for an extended visit in the future.

I have a Sportsman 16RBT with a weight of about 3,000 lbs loaded and I tow with a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Switched into tow/haul mode and using cruise it does a great job on level grade and even moderate hills. The only time I take it off cruise is where the grade reaches the point where the transmission is searching. In the Sierra Nevadas, nope, no cruise, across Nebraska, I loved it.

Welcome to the forum and welcome to RV camping. We just purchased a 2011 16RBT Sportsman in September as a step up from a modified teardrop made by Runaway.
No camper is too small or too big, just get out and enjoy it! We have had overnight quick trips to both Florida coasts and trips North to the Michigan UP. We just returned to Florida from a long trip to California. You are right, you don't need much to be happy. Happy retirement and thank you for your service!

On the Florida Atlantic Coast we have stayed at Tomoka State Park which is on a little peninsula just north of Daytona. It isnt on the beach but quite close and surrounded by water, great for kayaking and fishing. Rates were low, I think about $23.00 and the sites were close but very secluded. Bugs were a bit of a problem, bring the deet. Our first choice would havebeen Anastasia State Park but it is booked over a year in advance. Tomoka has a little cafe on the river with supplies and a fire pit is going on weekend evenings, there is a playground for the kids.
Further south we stayed at Wickham Park, a Brevard County Park that has equestrian facilities. At $23.00 they are also cheap, there is a playground and supervised swimmimg area in the lake. it's not on the beach but the drive over the causeway is short.
On the gulf coast we stayed in a KOA just across the bridge from Madeira Beach which is a pretty barrier island just south of Clearwater. We prefer a state park over KOA to be honest but this one has a great location on a lagoon that goes into the intercoastal and very close to the beach. Walmart and Publix are close, there is a pool and playground. We would not return, the facilities need updating and the staff did not appear happy to be there. Just getting morning coffee in their store seemed to be an imposition for them. We prefer Fort Desoto about ten miles further south but it books up quickly.
