What prevents water from entering the fresh water tank when hooked up to a water source other than the check valve in the water pump?

What prevents water from entering the fresh water tank when hooked up to a water source other than the check valve in the water pump? Nothing. If you are getting water in the tank from the city water connection, then the pump check valve is leaking from debris or damage. Running the pump repeatedly might dislodge debris. If you have a pressure fill system, one that uses a valve to direct water to the tank, the valve may not be closed properly or damaged.

Lynnmor: Well, this could be another symptom of the check valve in the pump being bad. I have another thread on here about the pump cycling occassionally when on but no water running. I am thinking maybe it is time to just get a new pump. Or is the check valve replacement a simple an inexpensive process? Thanks, Bruce

Get the brand and model number off the pump and Google it. You may be able to simply replace some parts or even just clean it out.

My water pump was replaced under warranty when it started filling the water tank while on city water. I assume the check valve was bad. The water pump has always had trouble pumping water unless the tank is over 1/2 full. I am guessing that the intake is positioned high on the tank which causes the pump to suck air unless the tank is filled. I believe that this is a design problem which I am not happy about but I have learned to travel with a mostly filled tank. I hate carrying the extra weight but having water in a pinch is worth it

Yah, I am going to pull the water pump after our last trip at the end of September. I will check it out to see if I can repair it. If not, I will replace it. Should I try to replace it with the same make/model or is it advisable to go with a different brand.
My pump works well other than cycling when not running water and allowing back flow when on city hookups. It works well whether the fresh water tank is 1/8 full or completely full. The pickup for the freshwater tank is on the bottom of the tank in my TT. I just think like irish1, that the check valve has a small leak either from damage or some debris stuck in it. At 7 years old, the warranty is not a consideration any more.
Let me know what you all think about what I should do if I have to replace the pump.

Let me know what you all think about what I should do if I have to replace the pump. You likely can get the parts to repair the pump. If you want a new pump, most any RV type pump can be used. A cheap and easy way to fix your problem is to just add a check valve like this: link

lynnmor, you and the rest of the community on this forum are great. Suggestions like this are just great. I will try to fix the pump first and if not, then I will consider this solution vs buying new. THanks so much. Bruce

You can find pumps pretty cheap even with shipping, ask if they have your model of pump or a better model, you would be surprised at the cost ... I just bought a couple of parts from a local salvage yard an they beat the price on everyone an it was new parts they ordered out of a part book, so it's not only salvage it can be new stuff a well ... Safe Travels Chuck

I found several of the links in that article broken. I will revisit it at another time, but for now, I plan to either fix the pump or replace with new. THe cost of a new one shouldn't be that expensive, so I figure for the hassle, I would rather go new than risk a bad or going bad part that I would have to deal with again.
I am actually a member of RVShare and that article would be very helpful if it was updated.
